Young Lawyers Section

The Young Lawyers Division promotes the objectives of the Kentucky Bar Association, assists young lawyers in the practice of law, conducts programs of interest and value to young lawyers and enhances the image of the legal profession.  

2010 Kentucky Law Update

The KBA presents the Kentucky Law Update one time in each Supreme Court District during the fall of each year. The program offers every Kentucky Bar Association member the opportunity to meet the annual CLE requirement, including ethics, close to home and with no registration fee.

This monthly newsletter provides information about the activities of the Kentucky Bar Association and other information relevant to attorneys practicing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Bench and Bar

Each bi-monthly issue of Bench & Bar Magazine informs attorneys of new developments in the legal system, and helps to further educate attorneys in existing areas of the law. The magazine also provides an outlet for announcements of promotions, firm formations or relocations, and honors.

 

"Within twelve (12) months following the date of admission as set forth on the certificate of admission, each person admitted to membership to the Kentucky Bar Association shall complete the New Lawyer Program."

 

Exemption Circumstances:

  1. The member is admitted to practice in another jurisdiction for a minimum of five years, and will certify such prior admission to the Commission by filling out Form #9 and submitting it to the Director.
  2. The member has attended a mandatory New Lawyer Program of at least twelve and one-half (12.5) credits, including two (2) ethics credits, offered by the state bar in another jurisdiction , and will certify such to the Commission by submitting a written request with supporting documentation of attendance to the Director.

Extension Circumstances:

Hardship Extension

  1. Where the member demonstrates hardship or other good cause clearly warranting relief. Requests for relief under this subsection must set forth all circumstances upon which the request is based, including documentation. In this circumstance, the member shall complete the requirement set forth in SCR3.652 (5) and (6) as soon as reasonably practicable as determined by the Commission. Member must submit Form #8-A along with the supporting documentation to the Director for consideration.

Non-Hardship Extensions

  1. Where the member fails to demonstrate hardship or other good cause clearly warranting relief. In this circumstance, the member must pay a fee of $250.00 and complete the requirement set forth in SCR3.652 (5) and (6) at the next regularly scheduled New Lawyer Program. Member must submit Form #8-A along with the $250 filing fee to the Director for consideration.
  2. Where the member is out-of-state and not practicing law in the state of Kentucky. Member must fill out Form #10 and submit it to the Director for consideration. This extension is granted in one year increments. It is the responsibility of the member to request annual renewal of this extension so long as he/she is not practicing law in the state of Kentucky.
