I passed the
Kentucky Bar Examination in July and was
admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association in
October of 2011. I understand I have one
year from this date to complete the New Lawyer Program. How many times a year is the
program offered?
The New Lawyer Program is offered twice a year, once in
January/February, and again in June in conjunction with
the KBA Annual Convention. In order to
fulfill your requirement within one year, you
must attend the next scheduled program in June
2012.
I am supposed to
attend the next scheduled New Lawyer Program in
June of 2012 in order to fill my requirement on
time. I am not going to be able to attend
due to a scheduling conflict. What do I
need to do? Will I be subject to a
penalty?
There are special
circumstances in which extensions and exemptions
are granted. However, one must demonstrate
hardship or other good cause, and supply
supporting documentation. Please refer to
the Exemptions and Extensions
section of the New Lawyer Program web site for
further information. The request for an
extension or exemption must be received prior to
30 days past the actual deadline for completion.
I was admitted to
the Kentucky Bar Association in October of
2011. I attended the New Lawyer Program
in January of 2012. I earned 13.5 total CLE
credits. Do these credits apply to my
first year's CLE requirement as
well?
The New Lawyer Program CLE requirement and the first year's
annual CLE requirement are two separate
items. The New Lawyer Program must be
completed within one year of admission to the
Kentucky Bar Association. You are exempted
from the annual CLE requirement for the
remainder of the educational year in which you
were admitted (the Kentucky Bar Association's
educational year begins July 1 and ends June
30). You are exempt from your first annual
CLE requirement through June 2012. After
that, you are responsible for fulfilling your
first annual requirement by June 2013. The
credits earned at the January New Lawyer Program will
carry forward into the next educational year to
satisfy your 2012-13 educational year
requirement.
