Tracking Client Research

Need to keep track of time spent doing online research for a client? Utilizing the Client and Session Summary features of Casemaker can help. Simply create a Client and select that client each time you begin to conduct research for them. Once you have finished, click the Sign Out link to sign out of Casemaker and view the Session Summary. The Session Summary contains the date, time and client for each search, which can be used to keep track of billable hours for the client. Please remember to print this information as it cannot be retrieved after closing the Session Summary.

Phrase Searching

So you are looking for Ohio cases which involve improper driving. “Well,” you say to yourself, “I will just type in the words improper driving and hit search.” Casemaker then gives you quite the impressively long list of results. However, when you pull up a few cases you notice that they do not all seem to be on point. In fact, they just seem to be cases with the word improper somewhere in them and the word driving somewhere else in them. That is too broad. This just won’t do!

So how do you fix this? Try using the phrase search. To use the phrase search put the phrase or words you are looking for in quotation marks. This tells Casemaker to treat all the words in the quotes as one single search term. This will only pull documents where the words within the quotations are adjacent and in the same order.

So the next time you enter “improper driving” in the search bar – and you get a much better list of results.

As always you can find tips about phrase searches, as well as other search types by clicking the Search Tips link just below the blue search button in Casemaker. If you have questions, call Casemaker anytime Monday-Friday from 8 am to 8 pm EST at 877.659.0801, email them at support@casemakerlegal.com or click on the Live Chat link while in Casemaker.
