Dear Applicant for Admission:


On behalf of the Lawyers of Kentucky, we congratulate you on your success with the February bar examination and look forward to you joining the Kentucky Bar Association.

The 27th annual Law Day Celebration and Swearing-In Ceremony sponsored by the Supreme Court of Kentucky will be conducted on Monday, May 1, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. (EDT), in the House of Representatives Chamber located on the third floor of the State Capitol Building in Frankfort.

The entire proceeding will be conducted before the Supreme Court in a formal Court session, Chief Justice John D. Minton, Jr. presiding. This year’s guest speaker will be Professor Allison Connelly. Following Professor Connelly’s address, the Constitutional Oath will be administered to the applicants as a group.

The following information is provided to assist you in preparing for the Law Day Celebration and Swearing-In Ceremony on May 1, 2017.


RULES OF ADMISSION 

In order to practice law in the Commonwealth, you are required to be a member of the Kentucky Bar Association (SCR 3.030). You must also take the Constitutional Oath of Office which shall be administered by a Justice of the Supreme Court or the Clerk of the Supreme Court prior to your admission to the practice of law (SCR 2.100). By policy of the Supreme Court, you must appear before the Court in a formal admissions ceremony.

 

SWEARING IN CEREMONY 

NEW ADMITTEES

On Monday morning, May 1, applicants for admission are to report no later than 9:15 a.m. (EDT) to the hall area outside the State Reception Room, Room 220, which is located on the second floor of the Capitol Building (on the North side of the Capitol, overlooking the Rotunda in the middle of the building). Applicants will be lined up alphabetically and escorted to assigned seats in the House Chamber on the third floor. Kentucky Bar Association and Supreme Court staff members will be present to assist you. Please be on time! Late arrivals are not guaranteed a place in line. Please allow extra time to find parking and to pass through security at the Capitol.

 

GUESTS

Very limited seating for guests is available in the gallery overlooking the House Chamber on the third floor. The gallery has limited access, which includes steep steps and an incline. Family and child-friendly seating is available outside the Courtroom of the Supreme Court on the second floor, with remote television access. Please be on time! Guests should allow extra time to find parking and to pass through security at the Capitol.

 

RECEPTION

Following the Ceremony, the Kentucky Bar Association will host a reception in your honor on the second floor balcony area overlooking the Capitol Rotunda. Family and friends who may be sharing this special day with you are cordially invited to attend the reception. To assist us in providing adequate refreshments for the reception, please indicate your plans to attend and the number of people who will accompany you in the space provided on the attached form. PAYMENT OF FEES

The following fees must be paid BEFORE CLOSE OF BUSINESS ON MONDAY, APRIL 24, 2017, for you to be sworn in:

BOARD OF BAR EXAMINERS CERTIFICATION FEE
(Payable to the Kentucky Office of Bar Admissions) $50.00*

KENTUCKY BAR ASSOCIATION DUES
(Payable to Kentucky Bar Association) $36.66* (Dues are prorated for your first year of membership. If you will be sworn in before May 1st or after May 31st refer to the dues chart on the Kentucky Bar Association form attached. After July 1, 2017, you will receive a dues notice for your fiscal year 2017-2018 KBA dues.)

 

Young Lawyers Division Membership

Payable to Kentucky Bar Association) $20.00

*The amount paid to the Kentucky Office of Bar Admissions for $50.00 and the amount paid to the Kentucky Bar Association for $36.66 are TWO separate payments.

Immediately upon receipt of this letter, please complete the enclosed form to the Office of Bar Admissions and mail with payment. The form to the Kentucky Bar Association can also be completed and mailed with payment or the form and payment can be completed online at www.kybar.org. Payments to both organizations must be received BEFORE THE APRIL 24th DEADLINE.

For your convenience please note the following:

  • Please be on time. Applicants need to line up in the hall area outside the State Reception Room on the second floor no later than 9:15am.
  • Guest seating is limited in the gallery overlooking the House Chamber on the third floor.
  • Government issued Picture ID (i.e. Driver’s License) is required to enter the Capitol Building.
  • Due to the Kentucky Derby Festivities, parking is limited. A map of Frankfort is below. Parking should be available in the Capitol Parking Garage and on the streets surrounding the Capitol. Surface parking around the Capitol may not be available. The Capitol Garage entrance is off of (420) Old Lawrenceburg Rd. Take I-64 to Exit 53 toward Frankfort on US127. Continue on US127. At the third stop light turn right on 676 (East West Connector). Continue on 676 and turn left at the third stoplight onto Old Lawrenceburg Road. The entrance to the Capitol Garage is on the left.
