Convention Image for Section Free Shuttle to 2017 KBA Annual Convention Departing From Louisville-One Day Only!
The Kentucky Bar Association, thanks to the sponsorship by Kentuckiana Court Reporters, will provide a shuttle for ONE DAY ONLY from the Louisville area. The shuttle will depart from Mall St. Matthews in Louisville on Wednesday, June 21 at 7:15 a.m., EDT. The shuttle will depart from the Owensboro Convention Center on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m., EDT, and return to Louisville. The shuttle will only run from Louisville on Wednesday, June 21. This shuttle is equipped with Wi-Fi and restrooms.

New Lawyer Program Offered at 2017 KBA Annual Convention
The KBA’s next New Lawyer Program — scheduled for June 21 & 22, 2017 — will be held at the Owensboro Convention Center.

All newly admitted members of the Kentucky Bar Association are required to complete the New Lawyer Program within 12 months of admission, unless they have practiced in another jurisdiction for a minimum of five years and apply for an exemption.

Note: The program is only offered twice a year, once in the winter and again in June. This is the second offering of the program for the 2017 calendar year. The program is offered free of charge for attorneys seeking to fulfill their New Lawyer Program requirements, pursuant to SCR 3.640.

The Kentucky Bar Association is excited to announce the 2017 Outstanding Award Recipients. These awards will be presented during different events throughout our three-day convention. Make plans now to attend and support these outstanding members of our Bar Association.

The following awards will be presented at our Annual Banquet on Thursday evening, June 22, at the Owensboro Convention Center:

Distinguished Judge Award: Judge Thomas B. Russell, Senior District Judge for the Western District of Kentucky, Paducah.

Distinguished Lawyer Award: Pierce W. Hamblin, attorney with Landrum & Shouse LLP, Lexington.

Chief Justice’s Special Service Award: Diane Logsdon and Joyce Jennings. Logsdon and Jennings served for many years as lay members on the Judicial Conduct Commission.

President’s Special Service Award: W. Douglas Myers, Former KBA President, posthumously.

Kentucky Personnel Cabinet, Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and the Department of Public Advocacy Announce CLE
The Kentucky Personnel Cabinet, Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and the Department of Public Advocacy invite you to a workshop CLE entitled, “Understanding the Legal and Practical Details of the New Expungement Law.” The workshop will be held on May 3, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Department of Public Advocacy, 5 Mill Creek Park, Frankfort, KY 40601.

This program, offered to attorneys, will cover the new three-step felony expungement process, eligible felonies, and changes to the misdemeanor and juvenile expungement process.

The program has been approved by the Kentucky Bar Association and attendees will receive 1.0 hour of free CLE credit. There is no charge for the program. Spaces will be filled on a first come/first served basis.

AOC to Offer Legal Training for Dependency,
Neglect and Abuse Cases
The Administrative Office of the Courts will conduct legal trainings for dependency, neglect and abuse cases (formally titled GAL training). These programs have been approved for continuing legal education credits. For more information on the trainings and the schedule, click here.

Reminder from the Department of Workers’ Claims, per 803 KAR 25:010 § 3(1)(b), effective July 1, 2017, the Department of Workers’ Claims will no longer accept paper filings.

Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company of Kentucky (LMICK) and the Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program (KYLAP) will present a free lunch and learn opportunity at two locations. The program, CROSSROADS: Where Impairment and Ethical Violations Meet, has been approved for 3.50 hours of free Ethics CLE. The first program will be held on May 18, 2017, in the Azalea Room at Pine Mountain State Park, 1050 State Park Road, Pineville, Ky. The second program will be held on May 19, 2017, at the University Club at Arlington, 1510 Lexington Road, in Richmond, Ky. The Pineville program will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. The Richmond program will begin at 12:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided courtesy of LMICK.

KYLAP and the KBA’s Family Law Section To Co-Sponsor Annual Convention Program
Jeena Cho Photo The Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program (KYLAP) and the Kentucky Bar Association’s Family Law Section will be co-sponsoring Jeena Cho at the upcoming 2017 KBA Annual Convention in Owensboro. Ms. Cho will be speaking on the subject of mindfulness on Wednesday, June 21 from 11:50 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Ms. Cho is the author of a new book, “The Anxious Lawyer,” and will be doing a book signing at the convention. Ms. Cho will also be leading a guided mindfulness meditation session on Wednesday evening, June 21, at 9:00 p.m. during the convention.

KYLAP will hold an Open 12-Step Recovery Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 7:00 a.m. There will also be a yoga session at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 22.

KYLAP Hosts Lawyers in Recovery Meetings in Northern Kentucky and Lexington
The Kentucky Lawyers Assistance Program offers weekly open recovery meetings for lawyers, law students and judges in Northern Kentucky and Lexington. The Northern Kentucky Lawyers in Recovery meeting is held at 5:00 p.m., on Tuesdays at 510 Washington Avenue, Newport, KY 41071. Please bring your own coffee. The Lexington Kentucky Lawyers in Recovery meeting is held at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesdays at the Alano Club downtown, 370 East Second Street, Lexington, KY 40508.

All meetings are open to law students, lawyers and judges who are already involved or who are interested in a 12-step program of recovery, including but not limited to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous and Al-Anon. Courtesy Reminders will be emailed in early May to all members who need to complete and/or report additional CLE credits before the June 30th end of the educational year. A second reminder will be sent in mid-July regarding the August 10th deadline for reporting credits earned by June 30th.

If you need to update the email address on file, you may do so on this page, remembering to save the changes before exiting your profile. Don't Forget-Continuing Legal Education Deadline is June 30!
June 30th ImageThe deadline to complete your annual CLE requirement for the 2016-17 educational year is June 30, 2017. You must have a total of 12.0 CLE credits including 2.0 ethics credits to meet the annual requirement. The deadline to report your CLE credits for this year is August 10, 2017. Check your CLE record online at www.kybar.org.

KBA Video Replay Opportunities
Once again, the KBA will be offering a “Video Replay,” which is a great chance to earn up to 6.0 “Live” CLE credits including up to 2.0 ethics credits before the end of the educational year. This easy to use search engine contains up to date information on CLE events that have been accredited by the Kentucky Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Commission. Users can search by program date, name or sponsor for information about future and past events. Program listings include sponsor contact information, approved CLE and ethics credits, and KBA activity codes for filling out the certificate of attendance (Form #3).

Programs are approved and added in the order in which they are received. It may take up to two weeks for processing of accreditation applications. If an upcoming or past event is not listed in the database, check with the program sponsor regarding the status of the accreditation application.
