Supreme Court Rules of Civil Procedure (CR) Amendment
Effective July 1, 2018, CR 3.02(1) and (2) and CR 3.03(1) and (3) of the Civil Rules Procedure are hereby amended. Click here to see the attached order by the Supreme Court Amending the Rules of Civil Procedure (CR).

Kentucky Bar Association to Swear In New Officers and Bar Governors at Annual Convention
The Kentucky Bar Association will swear in their new officers during the 2018 KBA Annual Convention. The new officers include Douglas C. Ballantine, Louisville as president; J. Stephen Smith, Ft. Mitchell, president-elect; Vice President Thomas N. Kerrick, Bowling Green, William R. Garmer, Lexington as immediate past president; and Young Lawyers Division Chairman Jennifer S. Overmann, Edgewood.

Bar Governors receiving the oath of office are W. Fletcher Schrock, Paducah, 1st Supreme Court District (SCD); Matthew P. Cook, Bowling Green, 2nd SCD; Melinda Gillum Dalton, Somerset, 3rd SCD; Bobby Simpson, Louisville; 4th SCD; Eileen M. O’Brien, Lexington; 5th SCD; and Gary J. Sergent, Covington, 6th SCD; and Judge John F. Vincent of Ashland, 7th SCD.

Other Kentucky Bar Governors who will be recognized for their continuing service will be Van F. Sims, Paducah, 1st Supreme Court District (SCD); John David Meyer, Owensboro, 2nd SCD; Howard O. 27th Annual Memorial Service to be Held in June 12th
The Kentucky Bar Association will celebrate the lives and legacies of those KBA members who have passed since June 1, 2017, during its 27th Annual Memorial Service. The service will be held on Tuesday, June 12th at Christ Church Cathedral, 166 Market Street, Lexington from 3:30-4:30 p.m., EDT.

Members of the planning committee encourage members who are arriving in town just prior to the convention, and those who are situated locally, to participate in this beautiful, ecumenical service held in honor of our fellow Kentucky attorneys who have passed. The dignity of the event will be underscored by the Supreme Court of Kentucky dressed in their robes. Additional members of the judiciary have also been invited to participate. The service will feature various musical selections and will be led by representatives from different faiths. Family members of the deceased will receive personal invitations, but all KBA members are encouraged to attend.

Attendees for the upcoming convention who selected PDF Download for their annual convention materials choice will be able to access these materials on our website at on June 8th. Please download the materials prior to the meeting, as we are expecting a large crowd and internet connection could be slow.

Members who download the 2018 Convention App will also be able to select materials there and view them during presentations.

Registrants selecting printed materials can secure those copies outside each CLE session. Please remember, the printed materials are limited to members choosing this option on their registration form.
Supreme Court Rules Hearing at KBA Convention
Click here to see the Proposed Rules Amendments that will be considered in an open session beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018. The hearing will be conducted in Heritage East/Center, Lower Level 1 at the Lexington Convention Center in Lexington.

Invitation to suggest changes to Family Court Rules
by June 12, 2018
The Supreme Court of Kentucky makes it a priority to amend the Family Court Rules of Procedure and Practice on a regular basis. This ensures the rules continue to reflect the needs of the court and remain consistent with statutory developments. The Court adopted the Family Court Rules in 2011 and amended them in 2012 and 2017. The Court is currently soliciting suggestions for revisions from the judiciary, the bar and other interested parties.

You can view the current Family Court Rules, dated October 18, 2017, here. Please submit your suggestions by emailing them to by June 12.
Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers to Host Event at Kentucky Theatre
For KBA members practicing in criminal defense the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers will be hosting an event in Lexington on June 12, 2018 at the Kentucky Theatre. Jerry Buting of “Making a Murderer” and legendary death penalty defense attorney, Andrea Lyon, will be there to sign their books. There will also be a private screening of the new film “RBG” about the Supreme Court justice. Click here to view information regarding this event.

Want to help out Kentuckians in need AND earn free CLE?

Most of us have heard of Eric Conn and the damage his Social Security fraud scheme left in its wake. Many attorneys want to help but don’t know how. An additional program will be offered during the 2018 KBA Annual Convention this week in Lexington -- Eric C. Conn 2.0: Ethics & Pro Bono, sponsored by AppalReD and the firm Pillersdorf, DeRossett & Lane.

This presentation will discuss Eric Conn's scheme with focus on the ethical issues, the leftover client files, and how Kentucky attorneys can be part of the solution. Social Security is currently gearing up for another round of redetermination hearings and thousands of people will soon need volunteer lawyers, possibly starting as soon as August. Guidance and information about these pro bono opportunities will be discussed.

Eric C. Conn 2.0: Ethics & Pro Bono Opportunities
Time: Thursday, June 14th from 3:45 p.m.- 5:15 p.m.

This program has been approved by the Kentucky Bar Association for a total of 1.5 CLE credits, including 0.5 Ethics

Neglect and Abuse Cases
The Administrative Office of the Courts will conduct legal training for dependency, neglect and abuse cases (formally titled GAL training). For more information on the trainings and the schedule, click here. An application for accreditation has been submitted to the Kentucky Bar Association’s CLE Commission.

Kentucky Bar Foundation to Award $250,000 in 2018 Grants and to Recognize 25 New Fellows
The Kentucky Bar Foundation (KBF) will award $250,000 in total grants at its annual Fellows and Partners for Justice Society Luncheon on June 14, 2018. Thanks to the generosity of Kentucky attorneys, judges, and friends, the 2018 KBF grants will support 33 nonprofit organizations as they work to provide access to justice and law-related education across the Commonwealth. At the luncheon, the Bar Foundation will also recognize 18 new KBF Life Fellows and seven new KBF Fellows whose generosity helps make this year’s grants and those in the future possible. Who Volunteered with CARE!
Kentucky’s legal community celebrated its eleventh year providing financial literacy to high school students through the Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) program. This year, 132 attorneys and judges across the state volunteered with the program. These volunteers taught nearly 5,000 students about financial essentials including credit, budgeting, and student loans. CARE is funded by the Kentucky Bar Foundation and implemented by many volunteers who give their time and talents to make this program a success.

DATE CHANGE – Probate & Trust Law Section Annual Meeting, July 12
The Probate & Trust Law Section's annual meeting has been rescheduled to coincide with the 45th Annual Midwest/Midsouth Estate Planning Institute at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington. The new date and time for the meeting is Thursday, July 12 at 12:30 p.m. EDT. If you plan to attend the annual meeting, please register online no later than July 6. The deadline to complete your annual CLE requirement for the 2017-2018 educational year is JUNE 30, 2018. You must have a total of 12.0 CLE credits including 2.0 ethics credits to meet the annual requirement. Check your CLE record online at Note: The deadline to report your CLE credits is AUGUST 10, 2018 for the 2017-2018 educational year.
