2019 Kentucky Bar Association Outstanding Award Recipients
The Kentucky Bar Association is excited to announce the 2019 Outstanding Award Recipients. These awards will be presented during different events throughout our three-day convention. Make plans now to attend and support the outstanding members of the Kentucky Bar Association.

The following awards will be presented at our annual banquet on Thursday evening, June 13, at the Galt House Hotel:

Distinguished Judge Awards: Justice Lisabeth T. Hughes, Kentucky Supreme Court, Louisville.

Distinguished Lawyer Award: Charles E. “Buzz” English, Jr., English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, LLP, Bowling Green.

Chief Justice’s Special Service Award: Judge William Engle III, Retired, Hazard.

President’s Special Service Award: Daniel T. Goyette, Defender Emeritus, Louisville-Jefferson County Public Defender.

AOC To Offer Legal Training for Dependency,
Neglect and Abuse Cases
The Administrative Office of the Courts will conduct legal training for dependency, neglect and abuse cases (formally titled GAL training). For more information on the advanced and basic trainings, as well as schedule, click here.

An application for accreditation has been submitted to the Kentucky Bar Association’s CLE Commission.
Kentucky Court of Justice Kicks Off Effort to Help
Courts Handle Opioid-Related Cases
The Kentucky Court of Justice used a news conference in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the Capitol April 11th to launch a new initiative that will help judges, circuit court clerks and court personnel further address Kentucky’s opioid epidemic.

The RESTORE initiative is funded by a federal grant. RESTORE stands for Responsive Education to Support Treatment in Opioid Recovery Efforts.

The Administrative Office of the Courts is carrying out the RESTORE initiative as a subrecipient of a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant was awarded to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services as part of the collaborative Kentucky Opioid Response Effort.

2019 KBA Convention Activities
The Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program (KYLAP) is pleased to announce that they will be sponsoring a CLE program with the Military Law Committee at the upcoming 2019 KBA Annual Convention. On Wednesday, June 12, from 11:50 a.m.- 12: 50 p.m., KYLAP Director Yvette Hourigan will speak with Dennis Shepherd from the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, regarding, “Resources for At-Risk Veterans and the Practicing Bar: The Suicide Epidemic.”

New Lawyer Program Offered at 2019 KBA Annual Convention
The KBA’s next New Lawyer Program — scheduled for June 12 & 13, 2019 — will be held at the Galt House Hotel in conjunction with the 2019 KBA Annual Convention.

All newly admitted members of the Kentucky Bar Association are required to complete the New Lawyer Program within 12 months of admission, unless they have practiced in another jurisdiction for a minimum of five years and apply for an exemption.
